Athlete Expectations
Participating
in Track & Field is a choice. Athletes who choose to be a part of this team
are making a commitment not only to the team, but also to themselves. A commitment to work with their coaches and push themselves to the
best of their abilities. Commitment also means that Track comes before
any other outside sport an athlete may be involved with during our season. They
may continue with their other activities, but it should not interfere with our
meet schedule/practice times.
·
Notify your coach
of any conflicts you may have as soon as you know about them. For instance, if
you can’t attend a meet because of a school activity, let your coach know. The
sooner we aware of these conflicts the better we will be prepared as a team to
handle your absence.
o
If you are unable
to participate at True Team due to an outside activity, you may not be allowed to
participate at the Section meet.
·
Never be afraid to
talk to your coach. We are all part of the same team. If you have an issue that
is or may affect your ability to participate/compete, we want to know. We will
work with you to find a solution. Incidents and odd situations simply happen
sometimes that are beyond our control and unpredictable. Don’t assume that just
because when something bad has happened that your coaches won’t understand.
Some problems need to be handled on an individual basis and there can be the
occasional exception to a rule.
·
Athletes are
expected to remain for the entirety of every meet. If you need to leave early
for family reasons or perhaps a band/orchestra concert, talk with your coach.
We must excuse you in order for you to leave early.
·
Athletes are
expected to attend all practices unless excused by sickness, family emergency, etc…
o
If you miss school
due to sickness, family emergency, etc…, it is your responsibility
to have your parents notify the school and your coach whether it be by
email or phone. We need to know why you missed practice (before practice
begins).
o
Athletes are not
allowed to miss school after a late night return from a meet.
o
One unexcused
absence = miss a meet.
o
Two unexcused
absences = done for the season.
·
Athletes are
expected to be dressed and ready for our team meetings by 3:40pm. Individuals that need to visit the trainer’s room will have
to wait until after our meetings. The
training room is not for hanging
out.
·
Athletes are
expected to attend school and remain in good academic standing.
o
Any unexcused
absence in a class will result in being ineligible to practice/compete that
day.
§
Don’t risk
skipping classes, we will find out.
o
Failure to
maintain passing grades will result in ineligibility to participate/compete
until those grades have improved.
§
School comes
first!!
·
Chemical use is a
serious issue and will hurt your family, friends, coaches, fellow athletes,
team, and yourself. Don’t risk everything all you are working for this season.
Use common sense and don’t put yourself into a situation where alcohol and/or
drug are being used.
o
First violation =
Loss of eligibility for two meets or two weeks, whichever is greater.
o
Second violation =
Loss of eligibility for six meets or three weeks, whichever is greater.
o
Third violation =
Loss of eligibility for 12 meets or four weeks. (this is the entire season)
Parent/Coach Expectations and Communication
Both parenting and coaching
can be difficult vocations at times. By understanding the position of each
role, we hope to continue to give our students the best experience possible.
Communication you should
expect from your child’s coach:
·
Philosophy of the
coach.
·
Expectations the
coach has for your child as well as all the players on the team.
·
Locations and
times of all practices and contests.
·
Team requirements:
i.e. special equipment, off-season conditioning, fund raising
·
Procedures should
your child be injured during a practice or contest.
·
Disciplinary
actions involving your child’s participation.
Communication coaches
expect from parents:
·
Concerns expressed
directly to the coach.
o
Concerns about the
treatment of your child mentally and physically.
o
Ways to help your
child improve. (i.e. nutrition,
sleep, keeping a positive attitude, etc…)
o
Concerns about
your child’s behavior.
·
Notification of
any schedule conflicts well in advance
·
Specific concerns
in regard to a coach’s philosophy and/or expectations.
Topics not appropriate to
discuss with the coach:
·
Playing time. Many
first year athletes are often allowed to compete in the events they like, but
we do test athletes in various events to discover both their strengths and
weaknesses. We also run athletes in extra events early on in the season to
adapt their bodies to the stresses of bigger competitions later on in the year.
There is a strategy to what we do and we consider many factors that are only
noticeable at practices and competitions.
·
Team strategy. The
MHS coaching staff considers many things when we decide the lineup for our True
Team, Section, and State meets. They may range from injury, consistency of
performance, missed practices, relay vs. open events, and many others. We rely
on our years of experience and time spent with the athletes to decide our
roster for such meets. We simply ask that you trust our decisions to be in the
best interests of both your child and the team.
·
Other
students/athletes. The only information that will be available about other
athletes on the team will be the results from our meets. These will be updated
on a regular basis on the website.
Fundraising
We will be having Dave from Adrenaline
as our fundraiser again this year.
Fundraising will be very important this year as we will be using the
money towards travel costs and new equipment. If we wish to maintain what we
have, we all need to come together in order to help the team.
Equipment/Uniforms
Uniforms will be handed out
before the first meet. We ask that you please prolong the life of the uniforms
by washing them carefully and letting them air dry. They will need to be
returned at the last meet of the season (which will vary for each athlete).
Injury
Our trainers Brad and Jen will
be available to care for athletes during practices and home meets.
Lettering Requirements
·
Attend all
scheduled practices. If you cannot attend a practice, then you are responsible
for making up that workout.
·
Run, throw, jump,
or vault an honor roll standard. (They can be found on www.raceberryjam.com)
·
Be chosen as one
of our top 3 athletes (or as an alternate) for True Team. Be chosen to compete
in our Section meet or make it to and compete at the state meet. (This includes
all events)
·
Be involved with
MHS Track & Field for 2 or more years.
·
Coach’s
discretion.
Awards and Banquet
Junior athlete parents will be
assigned responsibility for organizing our banquet sometime in May. Letter
awards, next year’s captains, and other items will be presented to the team at
that time.
Recruiting
We are always looking for more
athletes to join this GREAT SPORT!!! If you know of anyone whom is not in a
spring sport and would be interested. Ask them if they would like to join us.
Track and Field is all about participation of individual efforts working
together to form a team.
You are taking part of an
extremely successful sports program at
